Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi (Donatello) was commissioned to produce a bronze Statue of David by the Medici family in the 1440's, and it has been a source of controversy, speculation and sexual innuendo ever since. An important mile stone in art history (it was the first freestanding, nude male statue since antiquity), it helped usher in the Italian Renaissance.
Donatello's David is on display in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence, Italy.
